Match Group takes the safety, security and well-being of our users very seriously – we consider it a top priority. While relatively few of the hundreds of millions of people that have used our dating services have fallen victim to criminal activity by predators, we believe any incident of misconduct or criminal behavior is one too many.
We have various brands in our portfolio that employ different tools, processes and policies to foster respectful communities and environments. The information provided below gives an overview of these technologies and methods. Depending on the needs of each platform, and the audiences they serve, different tools may be adopted by different brands, but the objective is universal; we are committed to creating a safe and positive experience for users on our platforms.
Our Safety Tools
Match Group brands use a network of industry-leading automated and manual moderation and review tools, systems and processes – and spend millions of dollars annually – to prevent, detect and remove people who engage in inappropriate behavior from our apps. Examples of tools our brands have used include automatic scans of profiles for red-flag language and images; manual reviews of suspicious profiles, activity, and user generated reports; shadow-banning suspicious accounts; as well as blocking of email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses and other identifiers associated with bad actors. Our brands also depend on our users to report any profiles engaged in concerning behavior so that we can investigate and take appropriate action.
Match Group Advisory Council
We work with external partners through the Match Group Advisory Council (MGAC), a group of leading experts and advocates involved in the study and prevention of sexual assault, sex trafficking, and similar issues. The executive team at Match Group meets with the MGAC bi-annually to evaluate our policies and solicit recommendations on how to improve safety on our products. The founding members include:

Government Relations and Legislative Work
As a leader in online dating, we have an important role to play in defining the standards for all players in our industry. That is why we work closely with legislators and regulators across the globe to define and pass new safety-focused laws that can help make both our users and those on tech platforms safe. We have also collaborated with the National Cyber Security Alliance in the U.S. to build best practices for the online dating industry as part of their “Stop. Think. Connect.” Campaign. We welcome the opportunity to work with governments around the world to make the Internet a safer place for everyone. Some examples of legislation we have sponsored or are pursuing include:
- The passage of legislation in the State of California that requires all online dating platforms to (a) post safety tips and (b) provide the ability to report other uses;
- The passage of legislation in Vermont that requires all online dating platforms to notify users where they (a) engaged with another user who was removed for fraud, or (b) changed their contact information;
- Currently sponsoring legislation in the States of California and New York to give victims of catfishing legal recourse against perpetrators.
Response to Reports of Assault
All users of Match Group brands are able to easily report instances of abuse or assault in-app or online. When a member reports an assault to one of the Match Group brands, they attempt to identify the alleged perpetrator and block the associated account. The incident is then reported to Match Group’s centralized safety repository and checked across our various brands to see if the user has other accounts on other platforms. If any are found, they are blocked as well.
The current approach to block underage usage combines tools and people in the service of safety. Our brands collect birthdates, phone numbers, pictures, bios and other inputs, which are used for age verification, coupled with sophisticated artificial intelligence and other tools to identify underage users attempting to circumvent the rules. Our brands also check IP addresses, scan photos and profiles for red flags and maintain databases of known offenders to help keep underage users off of the platforms. Human moderators review accounts that have been flagged either by automated systems or by user reports, and act on those reports accordingly.
Match Group has a dedicated team and sophisticated technology that patrols for fraud including automated and/or manual reviews of each member profile to block IP addresses from high-alert countries, identify stolen credit card numbers, and detect suspicious language in profiles. The Match Group brands instruct users to never send money to someone they met on our platforms, and to report the individual who asks that they do. These steps are designed to stop scams in their tracks and help protect the next potential victim.
We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment on our platforms. We encourage all users to report any unacceptable behavior so that the Care teams can investigate and take appropriate action.
